We are delighted to announce that GMYW has achieved ISO 18841:2018 certification, the internationally recognised standard for the provision of interpreting services. This significant achievement highlights our ongoing commitment to quality, professionalism, and consistency in every interpreting assignment we deliver.

What Is ISO 18841:2018?

ISO 18841:2018 is an international standard established by the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) to define best practice in the delivery of interpreting services across all sectors — including health, legal, business, education, and community settings.

The standard provides a framework for ensuring that interpreting services are delivered ethically, accurately, and to the highest professional standards. It covers key areas such as:

  • The competence, qualifications, and professional conduct of interpreters

  • Clear service provision processes, from preparation to delivery and review

  • Confidentiality, impartiality, and cultural sensitivity

  • Effective communication, safety, and client satisfaction

In essence, ISO 18841:2018 ensures that interpreting services are consistent, accountable, and of demonstrable quality.

The Two-Stage Audit Process

Achieving ISO 18841:2018 certification involves a rigorous two-stage audit process conducted by an accredited external body. For GMYW, this process was carried out by the Association of Translation Companies (ATC), the UK’s leading professional association representing language service providers.

The ATC plays a central role in promoting quality and professionalism across the UK language services industry. Established in 1976, the ATC supports best practice, provides accreditation and certification services, and champions high standards within translation and interpreting. Its ISO certification scheme is widely respected for its depth, independence, and integrity.

  • Stage 1 Audit: The initial audit assessed GMYW’s documented management systems and readiness for full evaluation. The ATC auditors reviewed our policies, procedures, and quality controls to ensure alignment with the requirements of ISO 18841:2018. GMYW successfully completed Stage 1 and received constructive feedback identifying opportunities for enhancement.

  • Stage 2 Audit: Following a two-month period of review and preparation, the ATC conducted our Stage 2 audit. This phase involved a detailed examination of how our systems operate in practice — including interviews, observation of processes, and verification of evidence demonstrating compliance.

The two-month interval between the audits allowed us to strengthen documentation, enhance training, and ensure that every element of our service delivery reflected the highest standards of quality and consistency. The successful completion of both stages confirmed that GMYW’s interpreting services fully meet the rigorous requirements of ISO 18841:2018.

Following the audit, certification was formally awarded to GMYW by the Association of Translation Companies (ATC).

Why This Certification Matters

Our certification is more than a formal recognition — it represents a commitment to continuous improvement and professional excellence. For our clients, partners, and interpreters, it provides assurance that:

  • Quality and reliability underpin every interpreting assignment

  • Ethical standards and confidentiality are upheld without compromise

  • Interpreters are competent and well supported, working within a robust quality management framework

  • GMYW’s systems are independently audited and certified by a trusted industry authority — the ATC — ensuring compliance with international best practice

Leading the Way in Professional Standards

By achieving ISO 18841:2018 certification, GMYW joins a select group of interpreting service providers operating at an internationally recognised level of excellence. This accomplishment reinforces our role as a trusted partner to public bodies, businesses, and community organisations alike.

It also reflects our belief that quality interpreting is not only about linguistic accuracy but also about professionalism, respect, and inclusion.

Our Commitment Moving Forward

At GMYW, our mission has always been to bridge language barriers with integrity and care, ensuring that everyone has equal access to clear and effective communication. The ISO 18841:2018 certification — following a comprehensive audit carried out and awarded by the Association of Translation Companies (ATC) — reinforces this mission and provides a strong foundation for continued growth and improvement.

We extend our sincere thanks to our dedicated interpreting team, our clients, and our partners for their support throughout this process. Together, we will continue to uphold the highest standards of interpreting — ensuring that every voice is heard and every message understood.
